SAJO’s Health and Safety Program

Occupational Health & Safety is a cornerstone of the construction industry and at the forefront of SAJO’s priorities and policies. Fostering awareness and a culture of safety across the organization is an ongoing process throughout the year and from year to year. Health & Safety is critical to SAJO’s reputation, its commitment to best practices, and its high standards of operation.

To ensure effectiveness, SAJO’s Health & Safety program consists primarily of systematic and regular training sessions, directly on project sites. Apart from providing the necessary materials and tools to employees, contractors and sub-trades, Health and Safety training on-site sensitizes all workers to potential safety hazards and to the means by which these can be prevented, averted, or rectified.

In addition, on-site training ensures that Health & Safety is perceived as an integral and critical aspect of everyday operations as well as being in everyone’s best interest. SAJO’s tracking software monitors those who have completed the training program and evaluates each individual worker’s understanding and implementation of the safety practices and protocols.

Key components of SAJO’s on-site Health & Safety Program include but is not limited to:

  • Mandatory weekly Safety Toolbox Talks distributed by the site superintendent.
  • Weekly Site Health and Safety Inspection Reports completed by the site superintendent and forwarded to the Chief of Health and Safety for weekly review.
  • Health and Safety Orientation for each person on the project site, with recognition (hard hat sticker) that the person has completed the orientation program.
  • Periodic site visits by SAJO’s Chief of Health and Safety to complete an extensive 151-point inspection checklist followed by a conferencing session with the site superintendent to discuss results.

SAJO’s site training program has proven beneficial to both the company and project workers in the following ways:

  • Safety is Put in Perspective– Project site personnel gain a better understanding of safety when it is seen in action.  Conducting project site training in real time demonstrates to personnel, the potential fallout of neglecting safety practices and is more effective than just talking about safety or communicating safety rules through emails or bulletins.
  • Project Site Personnel Learn in a Familiar Environment– Having training on the project site with which personnel are already familiar and where they spend the entirety of their time, enables them to immediately apply what they learn to the job at hand.
  • On-site Training Helps Overcome Complacency – Training is often seen as compulsory rather than something interesting or enjoyable such that personnel may tend to just get through the required material rather than absorb its significance and application. Training directly on job sites transforms the worksite into an instant classroom where real examples of potential hazards, non-compliance, or other issues can be demonstrated, and attention can be drawn to positive examples of safety practices by team members.

The development and promotion of Health and Safety protocols in conjunction with on-site training programs and ongoing communications on the subject, ensure that safety concerns and practices are foremost in everyone’s mind. To instill a culture of safety is paramount and at the heart of SAJO’s reliable operations, stable partnerships, and congenial work environment.
