Building Community Through Recreation

Designed as a central hub for recreation and community life, the Montreal West Sports & Recreation Centre, located on Bedbrook avenue, was developed as a large, multi-phase public infrastructure project intended to replace outdated and aging facilities previously located on the site.


Construction of the centre began in 2023, with phased openings starting in early 2026. The facility includes a regulation-sized ice rink, gymnasium, outdoor 25-metre pool, children’s recreational pool and splash park, multipurpose rooms, locker facilities, administrative offices, and amenities such as a café-restaurant and pro shop. It is designed to accommodate a wide range of activities, including basketball, volleyball, and pickleball, while future expansion plans include the addition of a soccer field and running track.

The recreational center is more than just a sports facility—it is a multi-generational community hub and multifunctional complex that brings together fitness, leisure, and social spaces within one modern, accessible environment open to all. Designed to balance industrial strength with human-centered design, the building integrates steel, concrete, and advanced mechanical systems with wood, natural light, and open spaces. This combination creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere that feels like a true community gathering place rather than simply a sports facility.

The building’s simple geometric form emphasizes functionality, while its exterior features a clean, contemporary design characterized by glass curtain walls and metal cladding. Inside, expansive spaces, large high windows, and abundant natural light create an inviting and comfortable setting for visitors.

The facility was designed to be accessible, environmentally sustainable, and climate-resilient, reflecting modern sustainability objectives. It incorporates advanced mechanical systems, including ice refrigeration, HVAC systems with humidity control, and energy-efficient heat recovery systems. 

Structurally, the building employs a hybrid system that combines reinforced concrete, steel, and engineered wood. A key architectural feature is the use of exposed wood beams throughout the arena, which serve to enhance energy efficiency through their natural insulating properties.

The project presented several technical challenges, including coordinating the connections between concrete, steel, and timber components, as well as designing a complex roof system supported by hybrid steel–glulam trusses. The ice rink also required the careful integration of a refrigerated concrete slab to maintain consistent ice conditions year-round.

Overall, the project reflects a highly collaborative delivery structure. Rather than being the work of a single builder, the centre is the result of coordinated efforts among multiple firms operating within a public procurement framework. 

The design and construction process was undertaken by a consortium of firms, including Blouin Beauchamp Architects, and Artelia together with structural engineering specialists Elema and D.L. Engineering

Construction was led by SAJO, acting as the general contractor and overseeing the complete on-site implementation of the project. SAJO was responsible for ensuring the successful delivery of a modern, efficient, technically complex, and sustainable facility designed to support both individual and community use.
